How to Care for Your Locks this Winter

Have you ever noticed dry and chapped skin or lips in the cold winter months? Turns out, the same thing happens to our hair as the weather becomes bitter and cold. The winds and cold air can make hair dry and brittle, putting a damper on your holiday look and spirit.

Check out these expert hair care tips for taking special care of your locks during the cold winter months.

Dry Hair

If youre noticing especially dry hair in the winter, particularly if you are aman who wears a hair replacement system, be mindful of what type of shampoo and conditioner you are using. Aim to find a product that has natural moisturizing and nourishing ingredients. The best moisturizing hair care products contain coconut oil and/or shea butter so be on the lookout for those ingredients this winter.

Heat Styling

With Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years, it seems like were always having to make our hair look presentable for holiday parties. Be careful of how many heat styling tools you use on your hair in the cold winter months. This includes blow-drying, curlers and curling irons, and straightening or flat irons. If youre using these types of tools, aim to turn the heat down as much as possible. As always, in all months, you should be using a high-quality heat protectant before using any type of heated hair styling tool. Also, try to make one heat style last as long as possible. For example, if you flat iron your hair for Christmas Eve, leave it straight for Christmas Day so youre not putting damaging heat on your hair back-to-back.

Protect Your Hair

Extreme winter weather conditions can cause further damage to your hair. If it is bitterly cold or snowing, consider protecting your hair with stylish hats, scarves, or headbands. These types of headwear are not only fashionable, but they can also protect the health of your hair, especially if you are awoman who wears a hair replacement system. Also, avoid walking outside with wet or damp hair after a shower. The wetness can cause extra stress on your hair as it touches the cold air.

Color-Treated Hair

If your hair is colored or highlighted, be sure to use special shampoo to protect and extend your hair color. The cold and dry winter air can affect the vibrancy of your hair color and leave it looking dull if its not properly cared for. Many hair products, such as shampoos and conditioners, have product lines that are specifically designed for people with color-treated hair.

Water Temperature

It may be tempting to take a very hot shower when its so cold outside. However, extremely hot water temperatures can actually leave your hair feeling dry and prone to breakage. Aim to go longer in between hair washing sessions, too, so you dont stress overworked locks.
