Once winter rolls around, it can quickly impact your skin and hair health. This is due to sudden changes in temperature, particularly when moving from warm indoor temperatures to the cold outdoors. Not only can your hair become dry and brittle, it can break and fall out at a more rapid pace as well. An increase in dandruff production is also not uncommon. Check out these 6 tips to keep your hair healthy this winter:
Tip #1: Minimize the number of times you wash your hair each week.
Although there are varying hair types, whether you have thin or thick hair, its not necessary to wash your hair every day. Shampoo certainly removes dirt and odors, but it also strips your hair of its natural oil, better known as sebum. Since sebum helps keep your hair moisturized, this will help reduce breakage during the winter months. If possible, based on your hair type and lifestyle, try to limit washing to just 2-3 times weekly.
Tip #2: Select your products carefully.
When it comes to many popular shampoo products, sulfate is a common ingredient. Once again, this can increase dryness. The drier your hair, the more brittle it will become. This is why you should invest in products that contain the least amount of harsh chemicals. Also, select conditioners that offer your hair humectants and fatty acids so that your hair can retain as much moisture as possible.
Tip #3: Wear a hat or scarf.
If you have a favorite hat or scarf, now is the time to show it off. This fashionable tip will immediately reduce exposure to harsh winter elements. However, its also important to note that while a hat can protect your hair and scalp, it may also increase the amount of sweat buildup. That is why its important to use a quality anti-dandruff shampoo, especially if youre prone to dandruff to begin with.
Tip #4: Do not over-style.
This goes for any time of the year, but is particularly important during the dry winter months. Heat damage can be avoided by limiting your use of hair dryers, curling irons, straighteners, etc. If your hair is already fairly damaged, be sure to add a deep-conditioning product to your haircare routine.
Tip #5: Dont go outside with wet hair.
Although youll want to limit your use of hair dryers, leaving your home with wet hair can increase your risk of breakage. Plan ahead so that your hair can dry naturally indoors.
Tip #6: Nourish your scalp.
Did you know that the living portion of your hair actually lies beneath your scalp? In fact, new hair growth spends an average of two weeks below the scalp before it begins to grow. To properly care for your scalp, do not wash your hair in overly hot water and once again, do not over-wash.
